Names for Jesus

This song is based on a promise God made in Isaiah 9 verse 6 to send Jesus to lead the people. He would be given these names.  These names are like titles that describe what Jesus is like…

Wonderful Counsellor – Jesus would be a king and would carry out plans that would cause the world to me amazed.

Powerful God – Jesus would be a powerful ruler. Jesus is God.

Father Who Lives For Ever – Jesus would be for ever compassionate towards people and provide for and protect them.

Prince of Peace – Jesus’ rule would bring peace and well-being to people.

John 3 verse 16

God made this promise about 700 years before Jesus was born in a little town called Bethlehem.  He was born to be The Saviour of the World.

John 3 v 16, which you may have seen on banners people hold up at sports events on the TV, talks about why God sent His only Son, Jesus.  Check it out and find out what it says.

It was my favourite verse when I was younger – I remember writing it out and decorating it to make it into a poster at my friend’s church holiday club. Perhaps you could do the same?!

Victory!

Jesus grew up and became a man and at the age of 33 was put to death on a cross just outside the city of Jerusalem.  Of course He didn’t stay dead and buried for long because on the 3rd day God raised Him to life again. He had won victory over death and the enemy!!

Above all

The end of the ‘The Promise’ song is taken from Philippians 2 v 9 – 11.  Jesus is given the Name above all Names which tells of the position He is in – more important than anything or anyone.

Have a look at Eph 1 v 19 - 21 which explains it really well.

Promises

Often people say they promise to do something because that is what they mean to do but then they may not keep their promises because they forget or put things off. We do make mistakes sometimes but it’s better not to say we’ll do something - if we know we may not be able to keep it.  It’s good to be someone who keeps their promises so people know they can rely on you.

When God makes promises for now or for the future, even when they are for 700 years or more in the future, He always keeps His promises!  God does what He says He’ll do.  It’s good to know we can always trust God and rely on Him.
